President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama today hosted the Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou and Mrs. Papandreou, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and Greek American community leaders at the White House on the occasion of Greek Independence Day. This was the 24th consecutive year that the President of the United States met with the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America and Greek-American community leaders on this occasion.

Twenty-four years ago, Manatos & Manatos created Congressional legislation and the White House celebration of Greek Independence Day, which has been maintained by all presidents from Ronald Reagan through Barack Obama.

Greek Americans who represent less than one percent of the U.S. population, and Irish Americans (the second largest nationality in America) are the only ethnic groups to have an annual event with the President of the United States.
